A rant about video games
While I’ve taken a step back from writing (it’s been close to 6 months now), there’s been something that’s been bugging me as of late…the lack of well everything in the video game industry. There are a lot of great things about video games, but let’s face it, there’s far too much crap out there and something should be said about it. With E3 having just passed, we got to see a lot of new games, but we also got to see a lot of bad games, and a lot of bad business decisions. I’ve asked myself a few times, “What makes a game a bad game?” Why is it that fewer and fewer games tend to innovate? Why is it that devs tend to play it safe and make mediocre games, instead of innovating and taking it to the next level? These are just a few things that bother me about the industry as a whole. Let’s dive a little deeper shall we?
read moreMy migration to the Xbox 360
I’ve conceded. I’ve migrated from the PS3 to the Xbox 360 as my primary gaming system. I’ve had a 360 for ages now, but I’ve always neglected it
and used my PS3 instead. Now before you start with “Ugh, another gaming post?!”, just realize that I have quite a few other topics to go over, so you’re getting this one first. Now then, I’ve been using my PS3 as the primary console mainly because of it’s superior hardware on paper. I also really loved the GUI of the PS3 and the actually console itself was much nicer. For every multi-platform game, I would buy the PS3 version. Mainly due to loyalty, but also because I just enjoyed the PS3 more. That though, has recently changed. What’s changed, you may ask? Quite a few things to be honest, but we’ll get to those in just a minute. It wasn’t my intention to jump ship, but I truly had no other choice.
Alan Wake: I want to live in Bright Falls
I don’t talk about gaming much, but I want to go over the best game you’ll play all year. Better than Red Dead Redemption,
better than God of War 3 (it pains me to say that) and better than Starcraft 2. How is it possible that this seemingly unknown game is actually better than every single game out there? Well for starters, it does something that most games just don’t do anymore, tell stories. Alan Wake has by far the best story of any game in the past few years and you’ll instantly see why when you play it. Now I know what you’re thinking, how can this game be any better than Red Dead Redemption? I don’t know about you, but Red Dead bored me to tears after awhile. Maybe it’s the open worldness of it, or just the blah gameplay, but I quickly sold the game back to Gamestop and found myself quickly playing Alan Wake and never looked back.
Piracy: And Why It’s Destroying This Industry
So I wrote this post about two years ago, but since I couldn
‘t import my old database, I’m just going to copy and paste it here. Since this was written two years ago, plenty of things have changed. I still feel strongly against piracy, but I’ve also edited out quite a bit of swearing I had in my old post. Please note that there might be a good amount of negativity, but I tried to tone it down a bit, so I do apologize for that. A lot of this post still matters, so I’m going to paste it below:
An opinion on motion gaming
Back in 2006 Nintendo came out with their newest console, the Wii. With it, brought motion gaming
with it’s Wiimote. Essentially what it is, is a remote control that can track your movement via IR. People loved it, and made the Wii the best selling console of this generation. Having used the Wii and hated it, I really hated having to flail my arm around like a jack ass, just to play a game. 4 years later, both Microsoft and Sony have their own answers to the Wii, the Microsoft Connect and the Sony Move. Microsoft’s technically is not innovative, in which you don’t actually have to hold a controller or anything; but it also lacks buttons and is incredibly annoying to press buttons with your hand. The Sony Move is quite similar to the Wiimote, being that it’s a remote-like controller you hold in your hand and does 1:1 tracking with your movement. The Move does offer quite a lot over the Wiimote and is actually built with core gamers in mind, unlike the Wii’s casual gamers. While I’m not excited about any of these, there are some redeeming qualities about motion gaming, but I honestly hope that it doesn’t last long.
